Unix secrets of billionaires

One reason why I wanted to write distcc is that when you have to wait for a computer, it costs more than just the time it actually takes for the job (compile, test whatever) to run. Nobody likes to just sit blankly waiting, so I tend to do mail or irc while the job is running, and sometimes stay distracted by that for a long time after it completed.

Mark has a simple but effective tool to reduce this lost time: a little script called alarum that plays a sound, so he can run make check; alarum and come straight back when it's done or failed. On my machine I have

% cat ~/bin/alarum
ogg123 /usr/share/games/neverdata/snd/jump.ogg
