São Carlos, Brazil

I'm in São Carlos, Brazil, for a few weeks work with Canonical. Interesting place.

Visiting London

I'm in London for a couple of weeks.

It looks satisfyingly *like London*, as compared to some cities which are a bit bland and generic. The weather is appropriately grey and drab, with gilded spires somehow picking up and concentrating the light.

I went to the Tate Modern on the weekend. It was deeply moving, probably more so than any other art collection I have seen. Not only are the works without exception outstanding, but the organization and juxtaposition makes them even more meaningful and powerful. Bruce Naumann's installation in the Turbine Hall is a wonderful bit of sound-as-sculpture. (Doesn't the name Turbine Hall just beg for something like this?)

I'm going to eat wierd organs on Wednesday at St John.

There is also a purpose to this trip.

The City of Books

I went to Powell's in Portland. This is a very large bookstore: one city block, plus one other building for technical books. It's intimidatingly large at first: where do you even start looking?

I spent over an hour there and did not get off the first floor.

Going to OLS and OSCon

I'm going to Ottawa Linux Symposium and OSCon next month, and then (probably) to Cupertino. Hope to see you there.

If I know you and you'd like to catch up, mail me.

Fort Collins

I'm in Fort Collins, Colorado at an HP internal get-together. Contrary to my expectations, the Denver-Loveland-Ft Collins strip of Colardo is completely flat and treeless. There are some very pretty and impressive mountains just nextdoor though. I went for a walk in Rocky Mountains National Park and could feel the thin air when walking up hills. It's been snowing just enough to entertain. Temperatures in the 30s Fahrenheit don't feel uncomfortable compared to Canberra.

Pictures to follow.

Thredbo

I went skiing up at Thredbo the other week. It was very relaxing. The weather was generally good, though the snow softened towards the end of the week.

We stayed at Alpenhorn, which was pretty nice. Contrary to their web site they do not actually have 802.11. They had exactly 3 CDs on continuous rotation in the living room for the whole week: Jamiroquai, St. Germain and REM. I don't need to hear them anymore. :-)

Even on the last day, when it had rained overnight and conditions were degenerating, Pete saw a TV anchor on the slopes gushing about the “perfect conditions”. What crap. Chomsky was right.
